MADRID, May 1-- FC Barcelona and Real Madrid both lost their games on Matchday 34 in Spain, but despite a 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad, Barcelona will be the happier of the two sides. Pep Guardiola's side saw how second half goals from Diego Ifran and Xabi Prieto overturned a first half strike from Thiago Alcantara to give Real Sociedad all three points. Barcelona rested key players ahead of next week's Champions League semifinal return leg against Real Madrid, but despite their defeat, the Catalans can still be crowned as league champions next weekend, if they take one point more than Real Madrid from their next match. That is because Madrid slipped to a home defeat to Zaragoza. Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho rested Cristiano Ronaldo and other key players and saw how they were surprised by their visitors. Zaragoza played on the break and were 2-0 up after 55 minutes thanks to an Angel Lafita goal, following a terrible missed clearance from Madrid keeper Iker Casillas, and a Gabi Fernandez penalty, which came after a Ricardo Carvalho foul on Lafita. Sergio Ramos scored for Madrid before Lafita made it 3-1 on the break and although Karim Benzema scored a second for Madrid, his side couldn't make their late pressure count. Madrid ended with 10 men after Carvalho was sent off for two yellow cards, while Zaragoza take a huge step towards avoiding relegation. Meanwhile Saturday also saw Kun Aguero give Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win away to Deportivo la Coruna. |
