LONDON, Dec. 1-- It was a good weekend for Liverpool at the top of the Premier League as Jurgen Klopp's side survived goalkeeper Alisson's second half red card to cling on for a 2-1 win at home to Brighton and extend their lead over Manchester City and Chelsea. Defender Virgil van Dijk had planted two first half headers past Brighton's Matt Ryan and the game looked to be under control when Alisson handled outside of his area and was sent off with just over 10 minutes left to play. Substitute Adrian San Martin could do nothing as Lewis Dunk converted the resulting free kick, but did well to deny Aaroy Mooy what could have been a shock equalizer in the closing minutes of the game on Saturday. Leicester City were the only side in the top four to keep pace with Liverpool thanks to a 94th minute goal from Kelechi Iheanacho that gave them a 2-1 win at home to Everton after a long VAR review on Sunday. Struggling Everton had taken the lead thanks to Richarlison midway through the first half, but Jamie Vardy equalized in the 66th minute to set up the dramatic finish. Manchester City dropped two more points as Jonjo Shelvey fired home from outside of the penalty area to give Newcastle an 88th minute equalizer in an entertaining 2-2 draw at home to Pep Guardiola's side. Kevin de Bruyne, who had an outstanding game for City, looked to have given them all three points with an 82nd minute goal after Raheem Sterling and Jetro Willens both netted in the first half, but on the whole City lacked the opponent flattening intensity of last season. |
