MADRID, April 19-- FC Barcelona are just one win from being crowned as this season's champions of the Liga Santander following the 33rd round of matches in Spain played during this week. Barca's 2-2 draw away to Celta Vigo on Tuesday night coupled with Atletico Madrid's 3-0 defeat away to a resurgent Real Sociedad mean a win for Barca away to Deportivo la Coruna on April 29th will assure them the title. The title could be Barca's before then if Atletico Madrid lose this coming weekend to Betis at home and Real Madrid (who like Barca do not play at the weekend) fail to beat Leganes on April 28th. Atletico suffered their heaviest defeat of the season against a side that hasn't lost since Imanol Alguacil replaced Eusebio Sacristan four matches ago. Willian Jose opened the scoring in the first half, before goals from Juanmi in the 80th and 90th minutes sealed the win for the Basque side. Real Betis took their sixth consecutive win to strengthen their fifth position in the table thanks to a 94th minute goal from Junior Fripo, which gave them a 1-0 win at home to Las Palmas. A 93rd minute goal from Levante striker Emanuel Boetang gave his side a major boost in their battle to avoid relegation while condemning Malaga to second division football next season. Girona won a controversial game 2-1 away to Alaves thanks to goals from Aleix Garcia and a penalty from Christian Stuani in a tense game in Vitoria which takes the Catalan side close to a place in the top-seven. |
