TRIPOLI, April 30-- Wisam Ben Hamid, leader of Libya's largest militant coalition Shura Council of Benghazi, was killed in battles against the eastern-based army, his family announced Monday. "It is enough honor for them (Hamid and his comrades) that they were killed in the face of a military coup supported by Arab and foreign countries," Hamid's family told a press conference. They also denied Hamid's involvement in any attacks against Libyan people and obstruction of the political path of his country. The announcement came more than a year after the Libyan army said Hamid was killed in an airstrike in Benghazi. After the army commander Khalifa Haftar launched a military operation in May 2017 against terrorist groups in Benghazi, Hamid became one of his strongest opponents. |
