While made popular in pop culture via Chuck Norris in a 1986 movie, this real, yet clandestine special operations unit spawned from the U.S. Army is so secret that the U.S. government doesn’t officially acknowledge its existence. It was created in October 1977 by U.S. Army Colonel Charles Beckwith in response to the many terrorist incidents of that decade. According to GlobalSecurity.org, the 1st Special Operations Operational Detachment Delta unit (1st SFOD-D) specializes in counter-terrorism missions, including hostage rescue, reconnaissance, and barricade operations. Delta Force soldiers come from the elite of all branches of the military, and are carefully screened both physically and mentally before entering an intensive six-month training course to be versed in — and specially trained for — a multitude of dangerous and volatile scenarios. |
