Almost half (49 per cent) of women suffering a miscarriage are treated alongside pregnant women or new mothers in hospital, causing them unnecessary distress, a survey has revealed. One in five of those referred for a scan had to wait three days or more, while a third of those needing a surgical procedure after miscarriage had to wait four or more days for it.

A separate survey found 12 per cent of women admitted to hospital for miscarriage had to recover on the labour ward, and almost half did not feel they were treated sensitively. The survey of 500 women by parenting website gurgle.com also found 14 per cent of women had been told they would have to experience up to ten miscarriages before being investigated.

Mumsnet carried out this survey, has drawn up a five-point code to improve healthcare services for the one in four pregnancies which end in miscarriage, affecting around a quarter of a million women each year in the UK. They include actress Amanda Holden, who lost a baby last year at seven months, and singer Lily Allen, who is six months pregnant after two miscarriages.
