MADRID, May 12-- The penultimate round of matches in the Liga Santander leaves the questions of who will qualify for next season's Champions and Europa League to be decided in the final weekend, while (barring a miracle) Girona will be relegated to the second division Liga 123. FC Barcelona were greeted with boos as they took to the pitch for their home game against Getafe after last week's shock 4-0 defeat away to Liverpool in the Champions League. Leo Messi led the way with the pass fro Arturo Vidal's opening goal in a 2-0 win over the team that had kicked off the weekend in fourth place. Getafe's defeat allowed Valencia to move into fourth after a 3-1 win at home to Alaves, and Marcelino Garcia's side will play in next season's Champions League if they can win away to Valladolid next weekend. Alaves took the lead in Mestalla through Ximo Navarro's 12th minute goal, but the home side hit back with goals from Carles Soler and Santi Mina, before Kevin Gameiro assured the win with 22 minutes remaining. Pablo Sarabia's 70th minute goal gave Sevilla a 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid and means they also have an outside chance of finishing fourth. Koke had opened the scoring for Atletico, but Sarabia's goal saw the points shared. Athletic Club Bilbao remain seventh and will qualify for next season's Europa League if they avoid defeat against Sevilla next season. Two first half goals from Raul Garcia and one from Inaki Williams set Athletic on their way to a 3-1 win over Celta, who got on the scoresheet thanks to a late penalty from Iago Aspas. |
