The quake was so strong that one-third of the nation felt it. In several terrible minutes, the city and the countryside lay in ruins. The suffering of the people was extreme. Everything was destroyed. People were shocked. It seemed as if the world was at an end! All hope was not lost. Soon after the quake, a great number of soldiers were sent to help to dig out those who were trapped and bury the dead.
