Reading Comprehension A An armless villager picked up a new life by equipping himself with homemade mechanical hands and helping hundreds of others who lost their hands to live a normal life. Sun Jifa, now 63 years old, is living in Guanma village in northeast China抯 JiLin Province. He joined the army and served as an artillery soldiert（炮兵） in 1974 and since then he was fond of explosion. Sun Jifa retired five years later and got married after returning home. One day in 1980, he planned to use a homemade detonator（雷管） to blow up fish from a fish pond. But the detonator did not explode as the timer on it did not work. He then took the detonator home and when he was tearing down the detonator, it suddenly exploded and severely injured his hands and arms. Because of the serious injury, doctors had to cut off his hands and elbows. At that time, he was only 27 years old. Because it was very expensive to install（安装） mechanical hands at that time, he started to work with iron and steel to make his own hands. In 1981, he succeeded in making the first pair of mechanical hands. Over the past 35 years, Sun Jifa has designed and created four generations of mechanical hands that enable him to look after himself and do farm work. One day in 1985, when Sun Jifa was shopping in the local market, he found a man who was also without hands. He then came up with the idea that he would design and create mechanical hands for him. When Sun Jifa gave the man the mechanical hands some days later, the man thanked him again and again. |
