  山西省2017高考英语二轮复习专题训练:阅读理解(22)

  阅读下面短文,从短文后所给各题的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

  A

As the capital of New South Wales, Sydney is the oldest and the largest city in Australia. Because of its magnificent harbour and important position on the southeast coast of Australia, it is also one of the most important ports in the South Pacific. At the beginning of the 19th century when it was still a small convict(罪犯) settlement, it had already established trade with the Pacific Islands, India, China, South Africa, and America.

The first sight of Sydney, whether from the sea or the air, is always impressive. Built on low hills surrounding a huge harbour with many bays and inlets(水湾), the city is dominated(处于支配地位) by the Sydney Harbour Bridge, one of the biggest single-span bridges in the world, and the Opera House, with its shining white shell-shaped roofs that seem to echo(回声) the sails of the many yachts (帆船) in the harbour.

Because of its history as a great port and its position as the site of the countrys main international air terminal, Sydney is perhaps the only city in Australia with a really international atmosphere. Yet it remains a very Australian city, with a nice compromise(折中) between its British heritage(遗产) and the South Seas attractions of its climate and environment.
