  THE STRAWTHE COALAND THE BEAN

In a village dwelt a poor old womanwho had gathered together a dish of beans and wanted to cook them. So she made a fire on her hearthand that it might burn the quickershe lighted it with a handful of straw. When she was emptying the beans into the panone dropped without her observing itand lay on the ground beside a strawand soon afterwards a burning coal from the fire leapt down to the two. Then the straw began and saidDear friendsfrom whence do you come here? The coal repliedI fortunately sprang out of the fireand if I had not escaped by sheer forcemy death would have been certainI should have been burnt to ashes. The bean saidI too have escaped with a whole skinbut if the old woman had got me into the panI should have been made into broth without any mercylike my comrades. And would a better fate have fallen to my lot? said the straw. The old woman has destroyed all my brethren in fire and smoke; she seized sixty of them at onceand took their lives. I luckily slipped through her fingers.

But what are we to do now? said the coal.

I thinkanswered the beanthat as we have so fortunately escaped deathwe should keep together like good companionsand lest a new mischance should overtake us herewe should go away togetherand repair to a foreign country.

The proposition pleased the two othersand they set out on their way together. Soonhoweverthey came to a little brookand as there was no bridge or foot-plankthey did not know how they were to get over it. The straw hit on a good ideaand saidI will lay myself straight acrossand then you can walk over on me as on a bridge. The straw therefore stretched itself from one bank to the otherand the coalwho was of an impetuous dispositiontripped quite boldly on to the newly-built bridge. But when she had reached the middleand heard the water rushing beneath hershe was after allafraidand stood stilland ventured no farther. The strawhoweverbegan to burnbroke in two piecesand fell into the stream. The coal slipped after herhissed when she got into the waterand breathed her last. The beanwho had prudently stayed behind on the shorecould not but laugh at the eventwas unable to stopand laughed so heartily that she burst. It would have been all over with herlikewiseifby good fortunea tailor who was travelling in search of workhad not sat down to rest by the brook. As he had a compassionate heart he pulled out his needle and threadand sewed her together. The bean thanked him most prettilybut as the tailor used black threadall beans since then have a black seam.
