As Alan Riding points out, in this meticulouslyresearched history of French culture during the second world war, there was another optionattentisme, or wait and seeand the divisions between them were easily blurred. Sartrehimself was certainly never a collaborator, but his image as a rsistant was burnishedrather late in the day.
