Passage 2 The war was the most peaceful period of my life. The window of mybedroom faced southeast. My mother had curtained itbut that hadsmall effect. I always woke up with the first light andwith all theresponsibilities of the previous day meltedfelt myself ratherlike the sunready to shine and feel joy. Life never seemed so simple and clearand full of possibilities as then. I stuck my feet out under the sheets-Icalled them Mrs. Left and Mrs. Right-and invented dramatic situations for themin which they discussed the problems of the day. At least Mrs. Right didshe easilyshowed her feelingsbut I didnt have the same control of Mrs. Leftso she mostlycontented herself with nodding agreement. They discussed what Mother and I should do during the daywhat SantaClaus should give a fellow for Christmasand what stepsshould be taken to brighten the home. There was that little matter of the babyforinstance. Mother and I could never agree about that. Ours was the only house inthe neighborhood without a new babyand Mother said wecouldnt afford one till Father came back from the war because if costseventeen and six. That showed how foolish she was. The Geneys up the road hada babyand everyone knew they couldnt afford seventeenand six. It was probably a cheap babyand Mother wanted somethingreally goodbut I felt she was too hard to please. The Geneysbaby wouldhave done us fine. Having settled my plans for the dayI got upput a chairunder my windowand lifted the frame high enough to stick out my head. The windowoverlooked the front gardens of the homes behind oursand beyondthese it looked over a deep valley to the tallred-brick house upthe opposite hillsidewhich were all still shadowwhile those on ourside of the valley were all lit upthough with longstorage shadows that made them seem unfamiliarstiff and painted. After that I wentsintosMothers room andclimbedsintosthe big bed. She woke and I began to tell her of my schemes. Bythis timethough I never seem to have noticed itI was freezing in mynightshirtbut I warmed up as I talked until the last frost melted. I fellasleep beside her and woke again only when I heard her below in the kitchenmakingbreakfast. 1、How did the author feel early in the morning? AHe felt frightened by the war.
