Asking the way in different places
I travel a lot. Every time I ask "How can I get to the post office?" People in 【1】 places show me the way in different styles（方式）.
In Japan, people like to use landmarks（地标）. Because most 【2】 don't have names. For example, the Japanese will say to me, "Walk straight and turn left at the hotel. The post office is across from the bus stop."
In the countryside of the American Midwest（美国中西部地区）, there are no towns or 【3】 in many places. People will show me the way like this, "Go north two miles（英里）.Turn east, and then go another mile."
In Los Angeles, California, people usually show me the way in time, not miles. "How far away is the post office?" I ask. "Oh," they answer, "it's about ten 【4】 from here."
Sometimes I ask someone the way, but he doesn't know the answer. A New Yorker might say, "Sony, I don't know." But in Mexico, no one answers "I don't know.”People there believe that "I don't know" is impolite（不礼貌的）. They usually give an answer, but 【5】 a wrong one. You can get very, very lost!
