when
they
celebrate

traditionally
commemorates
the
arrival
of

Three
Wise
Men
of
the
East
in
Bethlehem
(near
Jerusalem,
Israel),
where
they
adored
the
infant

The
official

popularly
known

or
the
Twelve

of
Christmas,
extends
from
the

birth
on
December

to
the

on

Christmas
is
based
on
the

of
Jesus'
birth
as
described
in
the
Gospel
according
to

(see

Roman
Catholics
first

The
word

entered

English
language
sometime
around

as
the
Old

phrase
Christes
maesse,

Christ.”
Scholars
believe
the

shortened
form
of
Christmas-Xmas-may
have
come
into
use
in
the
13th
century.
The
X

for
the
Greek
letter
chi,
an
abbreviation
of
Khristos
(Christ),
and
also
represents
the
cross
on
which
